Meet the composers featured in the ‘Composers Spotlight’ series

Meet the composers who are being featured in the ‘Composers Spotlight’ prelude concerts during Ensemble Cymru’s May tour. Scroll down for video interviews with composers Gareth Churchill, Rhian Samuel and Guto Pryderi Puw. 

Ensemble Cymru and Composers of Wales have joined forces to shine a spotlight on the work of three Welsh composers this spring.  Three composers have been chosen to have their music showcased in special pre-concert events during Ensemble Cymru’s national tour this May. Gareth Churchill

Cardiff based composers, Gareth Churchill Gareth Churchill was born into a Welsh family in 1980, but grew up on the Somerset Levels. He studied in London with Rhian Samuel and in Cardiff with Anthony Powers; being awarded a PhD in composition in 2007.

The music of Gareth Churchill will be the focus of a ‘Composers Spotlight’ concert on Friday 4 May at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, 6pm. Ensemble Cymru will perform three solo works for the cello, double bass and harp, introduced by the composer, Gareth Churchill. Find out more here.

Rhian Samuel

Rhian Samuel is the composer of over 110 published works. After 16 years in the USA, she returned to the UK, teaching at Reading University, then City University, London (where she is now Professor Emeritus) and Magdalen College Oxford.

Guto Pryderi Puw

Guto Pryderi Puw read Music at Bangor University with composers John Pickard, Pwyll ap Siôn and Andrew Lewis, receiving his PhD in Composition in 2002. He became a full member of staff in 2006 lecturing mainly on Composition and Contemporary Music and was appointed as Head of Composition in 2015.

Guto Pryderi Puw’s music will be the focus of a Composers Spotlight concert at Pontio, Bangor on Sunday 13th May, 2pm. Find out more here.
