Viola: Lucy Nolan

Dublin-born Lucy is currently enjoying a busy career as a chamber musician and teacher.  She graduated with highest honours from the Royal Northern College of Music with a Bachelor Degree.

She also has a Master Degree in Solo Performance and an International Artist Diploma in Orchestral String Leadership, completed in conjunction with the Hallé.

Her teachers have included Simon Aspell of the Vanbrugh Quartet, the late Roger Bigley, and Louise Lansdown.

Chamber music has always been a huge part of Lucy’s life and she formed the Eblana String Trio with violinist Jonathan Martindale and cellist Peggy Nolan in 2006. The trio enjoys a busy concert schedule and recent highlights include recitals at Wigmore Hall and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. The members of the trio were inaugural Junior Fellows of Chamber Music at Birmingham Conservatoire and are current Park Lane Young Artists. Lucy is fortunate to have had chamber music tuition from many distinguished musicians including the late Dr Hugh Maguire and Mstislav Rostropovich, Dora Schwartzberg and Gabor Takacs Nagy. She has collaborated in chamber performances with artists such as Catrin Finch, Marcia Crayford, Moray Welsh, Thomas Riebl and Jirí Hudec.

Lucy is passionate about her career as a teacher and currently holds positions at Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music. She is the director of RNCM Young Violas and a regular tutor on Pro Corda chamber music and viola courses.

Aside from her work as a teacher and with the Eblanas, Lucy finds herself involved in a wide variety of musical projects. She has worked with Louise Lansdown in curating the British Viola Society’s contributions to the International Viola Congresses in Portugal (2014) and Italy (2016). She is currently chamber music tutor for ARCO, a distance learning project for children at the Cape Gate MIAGI school in Soweto. More recently, Lucy has been studying jazz improvisation and has performed and recorded with artists such as Alice Zawadzki, Stuart McCallum and Mike Walker.
