About us

Ensemble Cymru, Resident Ensemble at Bangor University and Venue Cymru, Llandudno, is the leading chamber music performing group in Wales with core membership of 16 instrumentalists and singers.

Established as a charity in 2002, its mission is to champion Wales’ heritage and contemporary chamber music culture alongside chamber music from across the world to audiences in Wales and internationally.

In the forthcoming 2017-2018 Season, Ensemble Cymru will be collaborating with OPRA Cymru on a brand new Welsh language opera by Gareth Glyn and Mererid Hopwood, and also Mid Wales Opera in their production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.  The Ensemble will perform with the harpist Catrin Finch at the International Harp Festival in Caernarfon in April 2018. Ensemble Cymru will also embark on two national tours in November 2017 and May 2018, which will be the culmination of a two year project featuring chamber music for harp co-curated by its principal harpist, Anne Denholm (Royal Harpist) and its Artistic Director, Peryn Clement-Evans. See our events page for full details of the new season.

Ensemble Cymru’s International Cultural Exchange Programme was established in 2015.  Its activities have included performances in Switzerland at the British Embassy in Berne, Davos, Chur and Valais.  The organisation is developing links with China and recently performed in Shanghai and Hong Kong as part of Welsh Government Culture and Trade Mission in February 2017.

In 2014, Ensemble Cymru’s production of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf reached more than 15,000 people through its national tour and S4C broadcast. The production and CD recording featured Welsh language narration by Hollywood actor, Rhys Ifans.

Each year Ensemble Cymru reaches communities across Wales through its national touring network of nine partner venues.  Its touring work is complemented by a programme of performances outside the concert hall reaching schools, schools for young people with special educational needs, hospitals, hospices and people in public places.
