Clarinet Trio – Jean Francaix
This programme features the viola at its most lyrical in rarely heard songs for mezzo soprano, viola and piano and its most virtuosic in the quirky music of Jean Francaix.
• Frank Bridge is a 20th century English composer. His songs are in a late-Romantic lyrical style
• Brahms songs are again late romantic and very attractive.
• Mozart Clarinet trio is sometimes called the Skittle trio because they thought it was written while he was playing skittles. It is wonderfully elegant showing the viola, clarinet and piano off equally.
• Jean Francaix (‘Frans-ay’) is a 20th century French composer who wrote in a very quirky and fun style.
