Clarinettist Peryn Clement-Evans and pianist Iwan Llewelyn-Jones present a chamber music programme inspired by poetry selected by Aled Lewis Evans on the theme of horizons.

Aled will read a selection of his own poems about various Horizons, plus a few favourites by other writers including his grandfather, the poet John Evans. They both shared the same horizon in childhood – Aled in Barmouth and his grandfather slightly up the coast at Dyffryn Ardudwy and Talybont. Both would have seen and marvelled at the same wonders in the bay. The music choices by Peryn, Ensemble Cymru and Iwan Llewelyn-Jones complement words and music, and respond to each other.

For me, poetry and music prompt us to move beyond our own different emotional and intellectual horizons. John Ireland’s Fantasy Sonata came easily to mind when reading Dewi Emrys’ Gorwel and particularly the use of the word ‘rith’ or illusion. Iwan and I went for the transcendent music of Bach for ‘Ymhell o afael byd mall’ or ‘far from the hold of a blighted world’ in John Evans’ beautiful words. Horowitz’s playful and upbeat rhythms express through music Aled’s words of optimism as the poet celebrates the shortest day in the knowledge that the days’ light can only increase.

This performance is dedicated to Ann in the final year of her leadership at the Festival. Ann has shown such kindness (and patience!) throughout the years. The festival has been a large part of Ensemble Cymru’s 22-year history. It has enabled musicians and composers to continue to share their love of this beautiful art form of chamber music whilst demonstrating its ongoing relevance for so many thousands of children and people from across north Wales during her tenure.
