Landmarks Concert

Ensemble Cymru rehearsals at the Amadeus Centre, Maida Vale, London.

Date 04/09/2017 Time 5:45 pm - 6:45 pm

Ensemble Cymru showcase some of the finest chamber music by female composers in this landmark concert.

Pride of place goes to Grace Williams’s Sextet, a rarely-performed work championed by the Ensemble, which includes a prominent part for trumpet – the Welsh composer’s favourite instrument. Hilary Tann’s haunting trio The Walls of Morlais Castle is directly inspired by the ruins of the 13th-century castle near Merthyr Tydfil, while the spirit of Irish jig lies at the heart of Rhian Samuel’s dynamic Phantasy Trio.

The Ensemble will perform young Welsh composer Claire Victoria Roberts’s Block (winner of the William Mathias Composition Prize 2017), and will be joined by baritone Jeremy Huw Williams for the world premiere of Nicola LeFanu’s The Swan.

Huw Clement-Evans (oboe), Cai Isfryn (trumpet), Florence Cooke (violin), Sara Roberts (viola), Heather Bills (cello), Harvey Davies (piano)

This concert is part of The First International Conference on Women’s Work in Music, School of Music, Bangor University 2017.
