The Music

The distinctive programming of The Music Room Series focuses on British and French chamber music from around the 1890s to the 1930s. British composers include Frank Bridge, Edward Elgar, Arnold Bax, Rebecca Clarke and Ralph Vaughan Williams. French composers include Gabriel Faure, Lili and Nadia Boulanger, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Each programme features between 2 and 3 performers with works chosen to highlight Ensemble Cymru’s eclectic range of classical musicians, playing in differing and sometimes unusual combinations to bring audiences a joyful, entertaining and meaningful selection of great music.

The Davies Sisters

Gwendoline (1882 to 1951) and Margaret (1884 to 1963) Davies were sisters, philanthropists and patrons of the arts who inherited a fortune from their industrialist grandfather. Margaret’s passion was art, Gwendoline’s passion was music and their lives during the early decades of the c20th were closely linked to both Britain and France. They travelled widely, built up a vast collection of paintings and served with the Red Cross in France during the First World War. After the war they bought Gregynog Hall where they established a centre for the creative arts and a music festival.
