Ensemble Cymru’s season finale celebrates chamber music from Wales and beyond

Ensemble Cymru will bring their sublime 2016-17 Concert Series to a joyful conclusion with their Wales-wide tour this May. Showcasing the finest chamber music from Wales and across the world, including music by Welsh composer Hilary Tann and the famous Mozart Flute Quartet, this tour is a must-see for music lovers!

The Ensemble’s newly appointed Principal Harpist, and current Royal Harpist, Anne Denholm, will join Principal Flautist Jonathan Rimmer and violist Lucy Nolan, to take us through evocations of the natural world with Sally Beamish’s Between Earth and Sea, and From the Song of Amergin by Welsh composer Hilary Tann. This Debussy-style trio will also capture the reflective and poignant lyricism of Arnold Bax’s Elegiac Trio. Violinist Elenid Owen with Heather Bills on cello will join the ensemble for a performance of Mozart’s exquisite Flute Quartet No. 1 in D major as part of the May concerts.

Speaking ahead of the tour, harpist Anne Denholm said:

“Ensemble Cymru’s upcoming tour in May will be my second national tour with the Ensemble since being appointed their Principal Harpist in October 2016. My work with the group so far has been inspiring and formative, and we have planned a varied and engaging programme for our audiences this May. Although the trio combination of flute, viola and harp is one of the most popular settings for the harp in chamber music, our programme shows a variety of sides to this versatile instrumental combination. I am looking forward to rehearsing and performing three key works that showcase the diverse sounds of the harp in British chamber music of the 20th and 21st centuries.”

The 2016-17 has been a hugely successful season for the North Wales based chamber music group which has seen record audience attendance throughout the series which began last October. It’s also been a year in which the Ensemble have been flying the flag for Welsh chamber music world-wide, with performances in Switzerland and China as the group looks to develop its cultural exchange activities further.

Ensemble Cymru’s May tour gets underway on May 3rd at the Ucheldre Centre in Holyhead and will call at venues across Wales including Venue Cymru, Llandudno (4&6 May) Galeri, Caernarfon (5 May) Pontio, Bangor (7 May) Neuadd Dwyfor in Pwllheli (8 May) and Capel Gad in Cilcain near Mold (9 May) plus The Great Hall, Swansea (13 May) and Aberystwyth Arts Centre (14 May). Please see our events page for a full schedule of venues plus dates and concert times. Booking is advised.
